The objective of this paper is to examine the network systems of Riordan manufacturing. The paper assesses the security systems of the companys hardware and software system, and provides the recommendation to enhance the security protocol.

In the recent years, Riordan Manufacturing has adopted policy of globalization, and has expanded its location to produce plastics fan parts in China. The expansion policy has made the company to boast of 550 employees in its operation process. With increase in innovation that the company has adopted, the Riordan manufacturing has enhanced high quality on the various products it is producing. Principally, the company manufactures varieties of products such as plastic bottles, plastic parts, medical stents, and fans with various sizes.

The companys network systems connect the corporate location in San Diego with its plant location in China through wide area network (WAN) and local area network (LAN). Typically, each location in the USA and China is dedicated with hardware (servers) that is based in handling the application request from different companys workstation.
However, from the observation of the company network systems, it is revealed that the networking schematics are outdated. For example, the current network system of the organization consists of the outdated network hardware devices that consist of Windows 98 workstations, Cat3 cabling, and NT Servers. The hardware infrastructure at Hangzhou and San Jose locations consist of 100 base T Ethernet backbones with two WAN connections. The data transmission from other location is effected with full T1 line, and this has been able to support between 35 and 50 users. The workstations of these two locations are connected with port Cisco 5950 switches where it is running on 100 base T Ethernet lines. Moreover, the server of each of these locations is designed to connect 1 GB Ethernet.
The network systems of Pontiac and Albany are modelled with Star Bus topology and were connected with 1 WAN connection. The Pontiac networks consist of 10 Base T lines and Albanys network system also consist of 100 Base T lines.
Apart from the hardware devices of the Riordan manufacturing, the company also has integrated software to track sales. (Riordan manufacturing, 2009).

The companys software devices are mainly to track the customers information and sales. Although, the company has installed firewall software to protect the network systems in some locations. For instances, the two locations do not install firewall to protect the company network from the unauthorized network access. Typically, lack of security devices to protect the companys network from unauthorized access can make an intruder to have access to the companys WAN, and this can made the company network infrastructure to be at risks. Typically, lack of secure remote virtual private network (VPN) is also a major concern because the VPN can provide security for the companys network.
Concisely, it is revealed that the network devices of the corporate headquarter in San Jose has security lapses. In addition, the network security at the corporate headquarter is protected by unknown firewall. Although, there is satellite connection that connects the company location of San Jones to China. However, there are no known security devices that protect network of these two locations. With security lapses in the hardware and software of the companys network platforms, the company needs to provide adequate security systems in order to protect the company assets.

It is essential to note that computer are now integral part of day-to-day business operations, and any unauthorized access to company computers can jeopardize organizational competitive advantages. Thus, an organization needs effective security systems in order to protect the company IT assets.
As being indicated in the previous section, there are security lapses in both hardware and software of Riordan manufacturing. Thus, the paper provides the following recommendations in order to upgrade the companys network security systems.
First, to enhance effective security systems in all locations that the Riordan manufacturing is operating, there is need to install effective firewall to protect the company network systems. Typically, the company WAN at Albany is not protected, and WAN at China is not also protected.
To enhance effective protection, this firewall software package should be the Cisco 525 PIX firewall, which has features of having multi protection devices. This type of firewall has capacity to provide various security devices for the company network such as denial-of-service (DoS) attack, replay attacks etc. In addition, the company needs to install IPTCP in order to intercept unauthorized network access. Typically, the IPTCP have the features such as IPVerify, traffic normalization etc for hardware protection.
In addition, all locations of Riordan manufacturing lack virtual private network (VPN) to enhance the companys network security. Typically, there is need to install VPN in all locations in order to enhance highest level of security for company network systems. The VPN provides security for WAN and LAN system, and VPN provides secured communication system over the network system.
